Record broken. 1 kg tomato is being sold for Rs 700; What will the worried consumers do now?
Bankrupt Pakistan is currently battling a serious financial crisis. Now, another problem has arisen for its neighboring country. In fact, the price of tomatoes in Pakistan has reached a new high.
According to reports, tomatoes are now being sold at a record high of Rs 700 per kg in most major cities including Lahore and Karachi.
A few weeks ago, tomatoes were being sold at Rs 100 per kg. This huge increase in tomato prices has made life difficult for the common man. Apart from local reasons, the price of tomatoes has also increased due to disruptions in trade with Afghanistan.
According to Pakistan’s Samaa TV, floods in different parts of the country have damaged crops, disrupted trade and created supply shortages, due to which the price of tomatoes has reached a record. Tomato supply to Pakistan from Afghanistan has also been affected. Following the border tensions and the ban on Afghan exports, the prices of tomatoes and other vegetables have increased in Pakistan, especially in major cities.
According to a report by Samaa TV, the highest increase in tomato prices has been seen in Jhelum and Gujranwala in Punjab. In Jhelum, the price of tomatoes has reached Rs 700 per kg, while in Gujranwala, tomatoes are being sold for Rs 575 per kg. Similarly, in Faisalabad, the price of tomatoes has increased from Rs 160 per kg to Rs 500 per kg, which is a completely different level.
In Multan, tomatoes are being sold for Rs 450 per kg, while the maximum price in the government price list is fixed at Rs 170 per kg. In Lahore, the price of tomatoes is being seen at Rs 400 per kg, which is much higher than the price of Rs 175 fixed by the government.
Afghanistan Impact: According to reports, the recent floods are the reason for the increase in tomato prices. Shopkeepers said that the prices have increased in the market due to severe shortage of supplies. Meanwhile, traders in Quetta and Peshawar said that the prices have increased due to the closure of trade routes with Afghanistan.
